Bacalar Lake, Mexico

In the continuous search for great paddling in Mexico we decided to spend a week at perhaps one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Bacalar Lake is located about 30 miles from the border of Belize and inland about the same distance. I have never seen water that reminds me so much of a cross between the Kenai River turquoise and the blue colors of glacier fed water! The lake is said to have seven different colors of blue and one look made it obvious as to why, truly mesmerizing. We really lucked out with a great place to stay on the lake and met just the right folks to tell us about some of the great paddle spots. It was a bit windy while we were there but that made for some excellent kiting, I did multiple downwind trips with my kite wing on a SUP and a few family paddle trips to places such as Pirates cove and the rapids. Although we weren’t allowed to paddle the “rapids” we had fun floating downstream in a lake. There are multiple lagoons attached to the lake which offer some great tours and a few cenotes to check out also. The Mayan ruins in this area were outstanding! We literally only ran into two people there and they were staying right next to us, the ruins were huge and you were allowed to walk almost everywhere unlike most of the others in Mexico which were off limits to walk on. Lake Bacalar was certainly one of the best paddle spots we have found in Mexico.
